The Aga Khan University's (AKU) International Internship Programme began in 2008 providing international experiential learning opportunities to students from our institutional partners. Over the past 12 years, the programme has grown bringing over 350 interns to AKU and the agencies of the Aga Khan Development Network in 14 countries across the Global South. Interns have accessed high quality opportunities, projects, and programmes, leading them to gain new skills, lever global networks, and showcase their experience and knowledge.

With the arrival of COVID-19, AKU pivoted to provide virtual internships to students. AKU has resumed the International Intership Programme in person for summer 2022. Since 2020, AKU-VIP has successfully recruited over 90 interns from a pool of over 500 students from 50 universities globally. These students were placed with 60 Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) mentors in over 10 countries. With academic backgrounds in diverse and exciting fields, students brought their knowledge and academic learning to projects, adding value and efficiency to host departments under strong mentorship and guidance from their mentors.

Over a 12-week period with at least 15+ hours per week, the AKU will provide quality experiences, and challenge our interns to apply their academic learning and experiences to real-world issues while making a positive impact. The AKU is designed in a way that will give students structure, support, and flexibility throughout their internship.
